Rwanda signs inter-governmental agreement with Russia

Russia and Rwanda on December 5 signed an Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes.

The agreement creates a legal framework for cooperation  in a wide range of areas, such as: developing projects for the construction of a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology and NPPs in Rwanda; assisting in building and improving Rwanda’s nuclear infrastructure in accordance with international recommendations; regulation in the field of nuclear and radiation safety; supervision of the physical protection of nuclear materials; accounting and control systems for nuclear materials; fundamental and applied research; production of radioisotopes; cooperation in the application of radiation technologies and nuclear medicine; and education and training of specialists for the nuclear industry.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said it will open the way for active dialogue in the nuclear field and will enable the practical implementation of specific cooperation projects. Joint working groups will be set up for specific projects and scientific research. It will facilitate the exchange of experts, the organisation of seminars and conferences, assistance in education and training of scientific and technical personnel, and the supply of equipment, materials and components.

The intergovernmental agreement was signed to develop the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between the State Corporation Rosatom and the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Republic of Rwanda in June.
