The Petrozavodsk branch of Russia’s AEM-Technologies (part of Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division Atomenergomash and the Karelian regional branch of SoyuzMash) has started manufacturing casings for the main circulation pumping units (MCPU) for unit 3 of China’s Xudabao NPP. The first spherical blanks have passed the incoming ultrasound inspection, Atomenergomash said on 21 May.

Petrozavodskmash quality service specialists together with representatives of Suneng Nuclear Power Company CNSP (China) checked the first two spherical blanks for compliance with the standards and requirements for nuclear equipment. The blanks will now go for mechanical processing.

The same day, the Izhora Plant, part of the OMZ Group, announced that it will manufacture the hydraulic tanks for the emergency core cooling system (ECCS) unit 7 at China’s Tianwan NPP and Xudabao 3 under a contract with AEM-Technologies. The ECCS is designed to remove residual heat from the reactor in accidents associated with rupture of first and second circuit pipelines. Four independent containers weighing 75 tons each contain 60,000 litres of an aqueous solution of boric acid are connected by a pipeline to the reactor vessel.

China and Russia recently formally launched the start of construction of Xudabao 3&4 and Tianwan 7&8 – all VVER-1200 units. The design and supply of the main equipment is carried out by the Engineering Division of the State Corporation Rosatom.
