Nuvia and Sommer win contract for security doors at Hinkley

A joint venture between UK-based nuclear specialist Nuvia and Germany's Sommer Design & Security has been selected to design, manufacture, install and commission the nuclear security doors at the UK's the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant.

The contract, which runs from March 2018, is valued at around £60 million and will be delivered over a six-year period, Nuvia said.

Nuclear security doors protect the physical security of the plant while providing protection from a conventional safety perspective. They will be installed in a number of different buildings at different levels on the Hinkley Point site, Nuvia said.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this significant contract by EDF Energy," said Keith Collett, CEO of Nuvia UK. "It is a welcome endorsement of our capability to develop and deliver solutions which address our clients’ most complex challenges."

Sommer specialises in the design and manufacturing of high-security products for nuclear and critical infrastructure projects. The company's managing owner, Oliver Sommer, said Sommer was "happy to be able to harness their extensive experience of supplying specialist engineered products to other international EPR projects with their existing client EDF, to the professional sector-wide strengths of Nuvia UK."

The Hinkley Point C project, currently under construction in Somerset, UK, comprises two EPR reactors. The project is expected to create around 25,000 job opportunities during construction and employ 900 people during the operation of the power station, Nuvia added.
