New cabinet for the UK

2 July 2007

The UK’s new Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced sweeping changes in the government, abolishing the Department of Trade and Industry and replacing it with the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (DBERR).

The new agency aims to promote competitive and flexible markets and one of its key objectives is to “ensure the reliable supply and efficient use of clean, safe and competitively priced energy.” The DBERR is to be headed by John Hutton, previously Secretary of State Department of Work and Pensions.

Hilary Benn, meanwhile, was appointed the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
