Korea’s Doosan Enerbility wins sub-contract for construction of El-Dabaa NPP turbine island

Doosan Enerbility has signed a contract worth KRW1,600 billion ($1.2bn) with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for construction of the turbine island for the El Dabaa in Egypt, being built with the assistance of Rosatom. This marks the first time that Doosan Enerbility has won a contract that calls for construction of an overseas NPP, in addition to its role of supplying key equipment, such as the reactors and steam generators. The turbine island comprises the turbine and generator-related equipment that is used to produce electrical energy.
The El Dabaa NPP project was awarded in 2017 to Rosatom’s ASE (Atomstroyexport) JSC, by the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plant Authority (NPPA). The project comprises four 1,200MWe VVER-1200 reactors at a site some 300km to the northwest of Cairo. In August, KHNP signed the contract with ASE to construct the turbine island at El Dabaa NPP - construction of the first building is scheduled to begin in August 2023.
Under the new contract, Doosan Enerbility will by 2029 construct a total of 82 buildings and structures, including the turbine building, water treatment and air conditioning systems and will prepare to the turbine and generator. To fulfil the Egyptian government’s request for localisation, partnerships are being pursued with local companies in the areas of construction and equipment and materials. Turbine hall equipment for the plant is to be supplied by AAEM, a joint venture of Rosatom’s Atomenergomash and General Electric.
“As this is our first nuclear power plant construction contract won overseas, it is significant for Doosan Enerbility and we will now be able to claim a nuclear new build track record in not only Korea, but in the global market as well,” said Inwon Park, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Plant EPC Business Group. He added, “We will do our utmost to successfully complete this project, so that we may contribute to the government and KHNP’s efforts to win more global nuclear projects in the future.”
The contract was originally expected to be signed in April but was delayed because of concerns that it might be affected by sanctions impose on Russia.
