ZiO-Podolsk JSC (part of Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division of Atomenergomash) has manufactured and prepared for shipment a set of main equipment for unit 5 of India’s Kudankulam NPP. The first set of SPP-1000-1 separator-superheaters completed and production of a second set is underway. The separator-superheater is designed to remove moisture and superheat steam from the high-pressure cylinder before it enters the low-pressure cylinder of the turbine. SPP-1000-1 is a cylindrical apparatus consisting of a separator and a single-stage superheater, which, when mounted at the station, are located vertically one after the other. The weight of the separator is 47 tons, the length is almost 7 metres, and the diameter 4 metres. The superheater is a heat exchanger consisting of 222 individual cassettes. The mass of the superheater is 108 tons, the length is 7.7 metres, and the diameter is 4 metres.

Recently, controlled assembly of the apparatus was successfully carried out. The specialists of the plant joined the parts of the SPP, the separator and the superheater, using technological strips. The assembly ensures the alignment of all the elements. The process significantly reduces the time and simplifies the installation of equipment at the construction site. The total weight of the assembled product was 162 tons, the height of the apparatus about 18 metres, and the diameter 4 metres. The production process for one set lasts an average of eight months.

The technical project, as well as working design documentation, were developed by specialists of the Department of Nuclear Engineering Equipment of ZiO-Podolsk, who also supported production of the product. ZiO-Podolsk has been a developer and manufacturer of SPPs for Russian and foreign NPPs since 1979.
