Kakrapar 1 connected to grid

28 May 2019

The 220 MWe unit 1 at India’s Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS-1) in Surat in Gujarat was synchronised with the grid on 24 May, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) announced. The KAPS-1 unit/reactor attained criticality on 19 May following the replacement of the entire coolant channel, feeder replacement and safety upgrades. The replacement of the coolant channel and feeder were necessitated after the reactor shut down automatically in March 2016, following leakage of heavy water from its coolant channel. The leak was plugged 10 days later.
