Inner containment dome installed at unit 2 of Rooppur NPP

1 July 2022

Installation of the metal structures of the inner containment (VZO) dome in the reactor building of unit 2 at the Rooppur NPP under construction in Bangladesh has been completed, Rosatom has said. Installing the upper part of the dome weighing 194 tons and with a diameter of 35.7 metres brought the height of the structure to 60.5 metres.

“Installation of the VZO dome a key event for 2022. Because last year we carried out similar work at the first unit, this time the pre-assembly of the dome took 56 days less - 151 days,” said Alexei Deriy, Vice President of JSC ASE, and Director of the project for the construction of Rooppur NPP. “As soon as both parts of the airborne zone are welded together, the concreting of the dome will start.”

The work was carried out in two stages. The lower part of the dome with a diameter of 42.8 metres and a weight of 195 tons was installed a week earlier. The assembly and installation of the VZO dome is carried out by specialists from Trest RosSEM (part of the Engineering Division of Rosatom). The lifting was carried out using a Liebherr LR11350 crane (capacity - 1350 tons) and took four hours. Both parts of the dome had to be installed in the design position with a tolerance of no more than 1cm.
