India expands its nuclear fuel complex

India’s Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) is expanding its production facilities in Hyderabad and is also setting up a new production facility at Kota in Rajasthan, Times of India reported on 9 June.

NFC is a India’s key facility for in enrichment of uranium, and manufacture of zirconium tube bundles for use in nuclear power reactors. It also meets the requirements of strategic and defence applications. At Kota, NFC will manufacture 500 tonnes of fuel assemblies to cater to requirements of India’s 700MWe pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs).

CEO of the NFC, Dinesh Srivastava, highlighted various achievements during 2017-18 including sustained production of PHWR fuel assemblies, uranium and zirconium oxide powders, and zirconium sponge. He attributed these to innovative approaches in problem-solving.
