Forsmark declared green

30 April 2001

Swedish utility Vattenfall has obtained an environmental product declaration (EPD) for the electricity generated at the Forsmark plant. The EPD system is administered by the Swedish Environmental Management Council, which presents environmental information on the basis of a number of predetermined parameters. Two years ago Vattenfall obtained an EPD for electricity generated on the Lule river. There is also an EPD for electricity from Vindön, developed by Sydkraft.

“EPD is a declaration, not an eco-label,” emphasised Birgit Bohund, who developed the EPD for Forsmark.

A spokesman for the company added: “These three environmental product declarations give customers and other stakeholders the opportunity to compare for themselves the environmental performance of different plants.” Customers buying electricity from these plants will be offered information that they can use in their own EPDs. The declarations are available on Vattenfall’s website www.vattenfall.se.
