First SG in place at Kanupp-2

18 September 2017

The first of three steam generators was installed at unit 2 of Pakistan’s Karachi NPP (Kanupp) on 10 September,  plant constructor China Nuclear Engineering and Construction Corporation (CNEC) announced on 12 September.

Kanupp 2 is a Chinese design Hualong One reactor – the first of two being built at the site, which already hosts a Canadian-supplied 137MWe Candu pressurised heavy water reactor which began operation in 1972. CNEC said the decision was taken to place the steam generators before the containment dome, with the aim of saving about four months of construction time.

Hualong One  or HPR-1000 is a 1100MWe, three-loop pressurised water reactor with Generation-III safety features. It incorporates elements of the ACP1000 and ACPR1000+ reactor designs.

In 2013, ground was broken for the first of the two Chinese-designed ACP1000 units but the project stalled. Construction restarted in August 2015  based on the Hualong One successor to the ACP1000.Commercial operation of Kanupp 2 and 3 is planned for 2021 and 2022, respectively.
