Poland’s APS Energia has won a tender organised by Russia’s Titan 2 (part of state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom) for the supply of uninterruptible power systems to units 1-4 of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey.
The UPS systems ensure that primary cooling systems and essential instrumentation & control (I&C) are available in the event of total loss of internal and external power supplies.
APS Energia's offer was for $21.77 million. Delivery of all systems is expected to be completed by 2024,
The Akkuyu nuclear power plant is currently under construction in Mersin province on Turkey's Mediterranean coast. It will include four VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactors. To date, the project has been funded by Russia. It is the first nuclear project in the world implemented using a Build-Own-Operate model.
Also on 9 June, Rosatom’s engineering division Atomenergomash announced that the Petrozavodsk branch of AEM Technologies had begun assembling the first part of the emergency cooling system (ECCS) for unit 1 of the Akkuyu plant.
The ECCS is part of the passive safety system. It includes 24 thick-walled hydraulic reservoirs in total: four in the first stage with a volume of 60 cubic metres each, eight in the second stage with a volume of 120 cubic metres each and 12 in the third stage with a volume of 60 cubic metres each. During operation at the station, an aqueous solution of boric acid will be stored in tanks, under a pressure of more than 60 atmospheres at a temperature of about 50 degrees C. When the pressure in the primary circuit drops below a certain level, the ECCS automatically releases a supply of liquid into the reactor core.
At Petrozavodskmash, all sets of cylindrical billets for container bodies of the ECCS have been prepared. The shells, made of carbon steel sheet. After welding the longitudinal seams, the parts underwent intermediate tempering. The kit for the first hydraulic reservoir was assembled into a 7-metre long pipe with a diameter of more than 3 metres.
Atomenergomash is supplying the equipment for the reactor installation and machine room for Akkuyu 1-4.
