EDF Energy signs long-term agreement with Holtec for casks

24 December 2019

UK-based EDF Energy on 17 December signed a long-term agreement with Holtec International for the supply of casks and loading campaign services for the Sizewell B NPP.

In 2017, EDF Energy marked the successful completion of its first used fuel loading campaign and a state-of-the-art new dry storage facility at Sizewell B, the first such facility in the UK. The dry storage facility uses Holtec’s double wall multi-purpose canisters and HI- STORM MIC casks, which Holtec says are “tailored to meet demanding performance expectations, such as a radiation dose limit to the public ten times lower than the average public exposure, a 100-year licence life, and multiple barriers of protection against threats and accidents”. Subsequent loading campaigns will be performed every few years and 70 additional casks will be supplied under the agreement.

Holtec’s Senior Vice President of International Projects, Dr Rick Springman, said he dry storage system at Sizewell B “has been adapted to satisfy the UK’s stringent nuclear safety requirements and the needs of the station”. EDF Energy produces around one-fifth of the UK’s energy from eight NPPs, more than 30 wind farms, one gas and one coal power station, as well as with combined heat and power plants.
