ECITB takes on new nuclear sector manager

10 July 2015

The UK's Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) has appointed Steve Barrett as the new sector manager for nuclear.

Barrett has over a decade's experience pioneering a wide variety of skills initiatives and programmes across the nuclear industry, including with Magnox, National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN), Babcock International Group and Thales UK.

In his new role he will be responsible for co-ordinating and leading on the engagement of all industry nuclear stakeholders and ensuring the ECITB offer meets the needs of the decommissioning and new build sector.

Barrett will also support ECITB's work with the Nuclear Energy Skills Alliance and Nuclear Industrial Partnership.

"The ECITB has successfully engaged with industry employers, skills working groups and government to deliver value through effective levyutilisation and access to cross sector knowledge and experience," said Barrett.

"I look forward to the opportunity to fully integrating the ECITB as an industry key strategic partner; enabling initiatives that support the competency requirements across new build and decommissioning."

The ECITB is currently supporting the nuclear new-build sector by helping to develop relevant training products and services, growing the training provider network and working to develop local supply chain capacity. It is also helping to set standards in key areas including project control.

In decommissioning, the ECITB provides grant-aided training that includes safety, environmental protection, cost efficiency and transferability of skills. In 2014, ECITB supported over 30,872 learners in the nuclear decommissioning sector, including 65 apprentices.
