Belarus strengthens co-operation with Russia’s TVEL

Following a series of high-level meetings in Minsk, the Belarus Ministry of Energy and Rosatom’s fuel company TVEL signed a number of agreements strengthening co-operation on the fuel cycle and other areas. TVEL’s delegation was led by company president Natalya Nikipelova. At a meeting with Belarus Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich current cooperation and prospects for its further expansion were discussed. TVEL presented details of innovative technologies for VVER reactors aimed at improving economic efficiency and safety, as well as reducing the consumption of natural uranium raw materials to ensure sustainable development.

The two sides noted that a lot of joint work has already been done to prepare strategic documents for the Belarus nuclear industry. These include the national strategy for radioactive waste management; the eventual decommissioning of Belarus NPPs; and construction of a radioactive waste storage facilities. In addition, there are plans to develop a roadmap for training personnel in the field of radioactive waste management.

Other areas of cooperation under development include energy storage systems – TVEL’s RENEA subsidiary already supplies lithium-ion battery batteries to Belarusian machine-building company BKM. New areas for cooperation were also discussed, in particular, the supply of stationary energy storage systems for the Belarus energy system and for large industrial facilities. It was agreed to prepare a joint roadmap for the priority implementation of pilot projects and localisation of the production of energy storage systems. The introduction of additive production technologies was also discussed.
