Australian uranium heads for India

21 July 2017

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on 18 July, during her official visit to New Delhi, that the first ever shipment of uranium from Australia is on its way to India.

A bilateral agreement between Australia and India signed in 2014 for the supply of uranium came into force in November 2015. However,   Australia's Joint Standing Committee on Treaties recommended that uranium sales should only begin after certain conditions were met concerning India's nuclear regulatory regime, routine inspections and reactor decommissioning plans.

Both Australian houses passed a bill on Civil Nuclear Transfers to India in November 2016.
