Ontario-based Nuclea Energy has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Miami-headquartered New Mining Co, a provider of high-density digital infrastructure and computing hosting services, to evaluate the feasibility of deploying Nuclea’s Morpheus microreactor to serve New Mining’s behind-the-meter power needs.
The MOU establishes a collaborative framework under which the parties will assess co-locating advanced modular power units based on Nuclea’s proprietary technology at or adjacent to New Mining’s data centre facilities. The evaluation is structured in two phases aligned with New Mining’s electrical load profile: an initial phase focused on engineering scoping for New Mining’s current approximately 30 MWe of operational data centre load, followed by a scalability phase evaluating modular expansion toward a cumulative capacity of up to 100 MWe as New Mining’s infrastructure grows.
The non-binding MOU does not constitute a power purchase agreement, virtual power purchase agreement, energy offtake contract, or any commitment to supply power or otherwise. Nuclea will not act as the operator of any nuclear equipment. The ultimate generation and delivery of power, if the parties determine to proceed, would be handled by a qualified third-party utility or specialised nuclear operating company to be separately identified and contracted. Nuclea will provide technical advisory services, including engineering specifications for its modular reactor designs, architectural planning for behind-the-meter microgrid integration, and initial regulatory and zoning pre-application strategy.
New Mining will provide site, engineering and power-usage data, in both instances to support the feasibility evaluation. New Mining is a US-based Bitcoin mining infrastructure operator with eight years of operating history and approximately 65 MWe of total capacity across facilities in North Dakota and Minnesota.
Nuclea’s Morpheus microreactor design is a lead-cooled, graphite-moderated micro-modular reactor, which will be factory-built, transportable and scalable from approximately 3.5 MWe to 50 MWe. Nuclea is targeting applications across data centres, defence installations, remote industrial operations and off-grid communities.
The Morpheus microreactor is currently in the pre-revenue, pre-conceptual design stage with no commercial reactor assets currently constructed or operational. The company is preparing its initial Regulatory Engagement Plan to submit to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to establish a formal licensing path. It secured a non-binding memorandum of understanding in June to potentially site a future nuclear test reactor for active demonstration at the Utah San Rafael Energy Laboratory and is currently moving through an 18-month commercialisation and licensing roadmap. The 18-month timeline is designed to transition the company out of this conceptual phase by funding and executing R&D, regulatory engagement, and prototype preparation steps. The capital to execute this transition is being raised through its strategic business combination announced in July with Mangoceuticals to achieve a Nasdaq public listing.
