Japan The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has submitted a plan to the government to start seeking a location for a permanent storage site for Japan’s high level waste. The plan includes a first budget request of ¥6.62 billion ($60million) in the fiscal year 2000.

MITI plans to pursue the vitrification and deep disposal solution. Under the current proposal a nonprofit organisation will be established in 2000, to take charge of the selection of storage sites as well as the building of facilities and actual disposal. Initially a list of possible sites will be drawn up, with the decision on the final location not being made for more than a decade.
