Rosatom Technology Structures (RTS – Rosatom Tekbnologii Soopuzheniya) Director General Ilya Vergizaev and the Deputy Director General of Kazakhstan’s Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) Evgeny Ermakov have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on a project for the construction of a multi-purpose research reactor and a complex of laboratories. It also covers increased cooperation on nuclear energy.
The MOU was signed during a technical seminar for experts and the scientific community of Kazakhstan held at the INP in Almaty organised by RTS with the support of Kazakhstan’s Atomic Energy Agency (KAEA).
“The head of state set a clear instruction to strengthen the scientific basis of the nuclear industry, ensuring the modernisation of existing installations and the creation of new ones, said KAEA Chiarman Almasadam Satkaliev. “The construction of a research reactor at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, as well as a similar project at the National Nuclear Centre, is a key step towards the development of modern technologies, training and expansion of research and production capabilities. Kazakhstan is open to various technological solutions and is ready to consider optimal configurations taking into account world experience.”
RTS Director General Ilya Vergizaev noted: “Projects to create a research reactor and a Centre for Nuclear Science & Technology (TsYaNT – Tsentrov Yadernoi Nauki i Tekhnologii) in the country make it possible to solve a number of important problems, including training specialists for the nuclear industry and expanding the research and production base. The project to create a research reactor in the Republic of Kazakhstan must be implemented with the maximum involvement of all interested specialised organisations in the country. The Russian side, represented by “Rosatom”, is ready to provide the necessary support for this.”
RTS specialises in the design and construction of medical facilities, research centres, and industrial facilities. It has significant experience in the integrated design and construction of Nuclear Science and Technology Centres, which include research reactors and scientific laboratories.
