The first segment of steel (internal) containment has been installed in the design position at unit 3 of the Sanao NPP under construction in China’s Zhejiang province. The weight of the component is about 223 tonnes.
Construction of the plant was authorised in 2015 by the Chinese government. The plant is being constructed by the Cangnan Nuclear Power Company, part of China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN).
Construction of the first unit began in December 2020 followed by unit 2 in December 2021.
In August 2024, CGN received approval to construct units 3&4 and construction of unit 3 began in 2025. The first unit is expected to begin operation in 2026, and unit 2 in 2027.
The site will eventually host six Hualong One reactors.
