The Indonesian President’s Special Envoy for Energy & Climate, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, told the 2026 Indonesia Economic Summit in Jakarta that the government is targeting the gradual construction of 7 GWe of nuclear capacity by 2034.
“The government has decided to begin procuring 7 GWe of nuclear power. The initial phase will be 500 MWe, and the total will gradually increase by 2034,” he said. He added that the NPP programme is part of the national energy transition agenda, complementing the construction of large-scale power plants outlined in the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL – Rencana Usaha Penyediaan Tenaga Listrik).
Hashim said that over the next 10 years, the government is targeting the construction of 70 GWe of new power generation capacity, with the majority coming from new and renewable energy sources. He noted that these renewable energy projects have attracted the interest of various global investors and technology providers. “The remainder will be provided by natural gas, which we consider a transitional fuel,” he said.
