During the official visit of a Hungarian delegation to Uzbekistan, a protocol on nuclear co-operation was signed between the Atomic Energy Development Agency under the Uzbekistan Cabinet of Ministers (Uzatom) and Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade along with Hungarian company MVM EGI Zrt. The agreement outlines key areas of cooperation related to Uzbekistan’s nuclear construction project.
The protocol includes plans to implement dry cooling systems with mechanical draft, prepare technical and commercial proposals for equipment supply, and initiate the establishment of a joint venture in Uzbekistan focused on large-scale assembly of dry cooling systems. Additionally, Hungary will contribute to the development of educational programmes and internships to support the project.
The signing of the protocol was an important step towards expanding multilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear energy at the regional level. It followed high-level talks between Khurram Teshabaev, Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Investment, Industry & Trade, and Csaba Marosvári, Deputy State Secretary for Energy Security at Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade. Also present were representatives of OTP Bank Uzbekistan, and Russia’s Atomstroyexport and Atomenergoproekt.
In June, Rosatom and Uzatom signed an agreement to study the possibilities of implementing a project for the construction of a large-scale NPP in Uzbekistan. The signing ceremony, on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), was attended by Rosatom Director Alexey Likhachev and Uzatom Director Azim Akhmedkhadjaev. This builds on the project to build a small modular reactor plant in the Jizzah region, featuring six of Rosatom’s 55 MWe RITM-200N water-cooled reactors.
