Unit 2 of China’s Zhangzhou NPP in Fujian Province has been connected to the grid, according to China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). Fuel loading took place in October after the Ministry of Ecology & Environment issued an operating licence for the unit, which is the second of four Hualong One (HPR1000) reactors under construction at the site with two more planned.
Once fully completed, the site will house six reactors with a total installed capacity of about 7,200 MWe. Each unit is expected to generate over 10 TWh of clean electricity annually, bolstering China’s energy security.
Construction of Unit 2 began in September 2020. CNNC said the unit will now undergo a series of planned tests to further verify its performance and ensure it meets all requirements for commercial operation.
Unit 1 of the plant is already in commercial service and has generated more than 8.8 TWh, according to Mei Bingyun, chief engineer of CNNC Zhangzhou Energy Co Ltd.
