Washington Group International and Raytheon Technical Services have won a $466 million contract to refurbish and restart fossil fuel stations at two production sites in Russia Seversk (two production reactors) and Zheleznogorsk. The contract, placed by the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, covers non-nuclear services. According to Washington Group this involves installing new turbine and boilers at existing coal-fired stations that will provide power and district heating.
The work is expected to take five to six years. When it is completed a shutdown programme for the three production reactors will begin under the responsibility of the Russian authorities.
