Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) has announced that installation of the second level of the internal containment vessel has been installed at unit 2 of the El Dabaa NPP. The installation was supervised by NPPA along with specialists and experts from Russia’s Atomstroyexport, the general contractor and general designer of the project.

The internal containment vessel is a cylindrical structure that will contain the nuclear reactor as well as the primary circuit equipment of the nuclear power plant. The second level of the internal containment vessel consists of 12 segments, which were manufactured by the production facility at the El Dabaa construction site. Each segment is 12 metres long, 14 metres high, and weighs between 60 and 90 tonnes.

The work was carried out using a giant crane by two teams of specialists, each consisting of more than 80 people. Following installation, the unit 2 reactor building is now one of the tallest structures on the construction site, with a height of more than 20 metres.
