Rosatom has signed an order to organise work on the construction of a new power unit at the Novovoronezh NPP. A 1200 MWe VVER-TOI reactor should be put into operation before 2036. Currently Novovoronezh NPP has four operating units with a total capacity of 3778 MWe. By 2040, it is planned to decommission the last two Soviet-built units – unit 4 (VVER-440) and unit 5 (VVER-1000). The new power unit will replace the retiring 1418 MWe, after which the total capacity of the station will be 3561.3 MWe.

Station director Vladimir Povarov said designers have already begun to work on the appearance of the unit “taking into account experience and existing infrastructure”. The construction of the facility will compensate for about 80% of the withdrawn capacity and should contribute to the growth of industry and the economy of the Voronezh region. To implement the project in 2023, 1700 hectares of adjacent land in the Kashira and Ostrogozhsky districts were included in the boundaries of the Novovoronezh urban district. It is planned to create up to 1000 jobs on the site.

In April, the government of the Voronezh region announced the construction of a high-voltage direct current power line 550 km long from the Novovoronezh NPP to Moscow. The project includes the construction of 500 kV substations and other infrastructure. Control is exercised by Deputy Prime Minister of the Voronezh Region Konstantin Kuznetsov. The DC substation will be located in the Kashira district.
