Engineers at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) have developed a new device and process to safely and efficiently remove the lid closures of open-head steel drums. Open-head drums typically have curved lid seals with ring closures that are difficult to remove, especially when exposed to long-term storage and exposure to outdoor conditions where rust may be a factor. This device has been successfully developed, tested, patented and currently in use at the Savannah River Site. For detailed information and a video demonstration go to http://srnl.doe.gov/tech_transfer/tech_briefs.htm.
