The first stage of decommissioning of the building of the former fuel tablet manufacturing plant has been completed at Rosatom’s Machine-building plant in Elektrostal (MSZ – Mashinostroitelnom Zavode). The project is being implemented within the framework of the Federal Target Programme “Ensuring Nuclear & Radiation Safety for 2016-2020 and for the period up to 2030” (FTP NRS – 2). The contractor under the state contract is the Siberian Chemical Combine (SKhK – Sibirskovo Khimicheskovo Kombinata) in Seversk, Tomsk region.

The facility was established during the first atomic project and was intended for processing uranium ore and radium. In the 1960s, and until 2014, uranium dioxide powders were produced in the building, including by processing various types of low-enrichment nuclear fuel to produce uranium oxide powders.

During the execution of the decommissioning project, 150 tons of technological equipment and engineering systems were dismantled. The resulting metal waste is sent to a specialised organisation, and after processing, the purified metal will be recycled for industrial use.

After decontamination of the surfaces of the housing, it will be disassembled. The contaminated materials will be packed in special containers and removed for final isolation at a specialised landfill. The site of the former building will be landscaped, the road surface will be restored, and the lawn will be laid out. The restoration of the territory to “green lawn” state is planned by 2028.
