Candu Energy Inc. and its consortium partner Ansaldo Nucleare have been awarded contract by Romania's Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) to provide condition assessment engineering services for unit 1 of the Cernavoda nuclear plant.
The contract is valued at C$12.3, with Ansaldo Nucleare's scope about 35% of the entire contract value.
Condition asssessment is "a key step" in preparing for plant life extension of Cernavoda 1, a 706MW Candu 6 pressurised heavy water reactor, for an additional 30 years, SNN said.
Sandy Taylor, President, Nuclear at SNC-Lavalin, the parent company of Candu Energy, noted: "The condition assessment services award is a great example of our commitment to support SNN throughout this critical preparatory stage as they ramp up for the refurbishment of [Cernavoda] Unit 1."
"We have brought the original designers of Cernavoda Unit 1 together through our strategic partnership with Ansaldo Nucleare, which is key to the success of this project,” he added.
Cernavoda 1, which was commissioned in December 1996, provides about 10% of Romania's electricity demands and its operation has avoided the release of more than 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
