CB&I to supply process vessels for Hanford CB&I Services, a subsidiary of Chicago Bridge & Iron, has won a $40 million contract to design, supply and install four stainless steel receipt vessels for the waste treatment plant at Hanford, Washington.
In December 2000, the Department of Energy awarded Bechtel a 10-year $4 billion contract to build the world’s largest radioactive waste vitrification plant at Hanford, where more than 240 million litres of chemical and radioactive waste from the plutonium manufacturing process are stored. Bechtel started construction of the treatment plant earlier this year, with commissioning due to begin in 2007.
CB&I will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, fabrication and field installation of four skirt-supported stainless steel ASME Section VII waste feed receipt vessels. These will be located in the plant’s pre-treatment facility, which will separate high-level radioactive waste from low-activity waste pumped from underground tanks. The scope of the company’s contract also includes the installation of more than 14,939m3 of stainless steel plate that will provide a secondary containment liner in buildings where vitrification will take place.
