India’s Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) said on 17 March that it was the lowest bidder for the fleet mode tender issued by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for six 700MWe Turbine Islands BHEL’s bid was for INR 108 billion ($1.5bn). BHEL said that as a result it had “retained its market leadership position of being the sole Indian supplier of Nuclear Steam Turbines. Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) are the mainstay of the Indian Nuclear Power Programme and 12 of NPCIL’s 18 operating PHWRs are equipped with BHEL-supplied Steam Turbine Generator sets (10 are 220MWe plants and two are 540MWe) with the others supplied by Canada and Ukraine. In addition, BHEL has supplied two 700MWe Steam Turbine Generator sets each for Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant (units 3&4) and Rawatbhata Atomic Power Plant (units 7&8).
