AREVA has been selected for modernisation work at Bulgaria’s two 1000MW VVER-1000 reactors, Kozloduy 5&6.

The French company said it has been chosen to provide services related to the safety instrumentation and control (I&C) and electrical systems. This includes offering expertise for the replacement or adaptation of the main electrical generators, which will provide a 10% increase in the electrical power output of each reactor.

"AREVA has already installed its TELEPERM XS digital safety I&C platform at both of the VVER-1000 reactors. This new contract demonstrates our customer’s complete satisfaction and strengthens our position in the VVER modernization market," said Tilo Landgraf, senior vice president of Installed Base, AREVA Germany.

Kozloduy 5&6 were commissioned in 1987 and 1991, respectively, and are currently licensed to operate until November 2017 and October 2019. Lifetime extension remains a priority and a plan for long-term operations is currently being assessed.
