The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has introduced its industry-first nuclear-ready notation, creating a structured framework for marine and offshore assets to plan for future conversions to nuclear energy. The 16-page Guide for Nuclear Ready Applications for Marine and Offshore allows owners, designers, and shipbuilders to future-proof vessels from the initial design stage.

It mitigates the need for costly, disruptive structural redesigns later in a vessel’s lifecycle. It preserves flexibility by enabling assets to run on conventional power systems, such as diesel-electric or battery-electric arrangements, while keeping the door open for nuclear adoption. The report signals to stakeholders and regulators that future nuclear integration requirements have been proactively addressed.

Under this new framework, ABS readiness assessments analyse critical design elements, including physical space allocation for future reactor integration; tailored structural arrangements to support shielding and weight; complex system and electrical interfaces; and advanced safety-related features specific to nuclear technology.

ABS said the framework shifts nuclear adaptation from a distant concept into practical design planning. The notation covers several critical design criteria:

  • Space Allocation: Reserving appropriate physical volume and shielding dimensions for a future modular reactor.
  • Structural Arrangements: Engineering heavy-load hull reinforcement to support reactor modules securely.
  • System Interfaces: Pre-configuring electrical grids and piping systems to easily connect with nuclear power units later.
  • Safety Features: Integrating dedicated containment parameters and radiation barrier provisions from day one.

The current guide focuses on nuclear energy for non-propulsion applications (such as floating power units). However, ABS plans to update the document dynamically as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) finalise global rules for commercial nuclear propulsion. The standard builds upon the broader industry push toward zero-emission alternative fuels, supported by initiatives like the IAEA’s ATLAS project to expand civil nuclear applications at sea.
