Borderline safety

3 August 2002

Several countries are monitoring their borders for radioactive cargo and luggage. The first alarm is often released by a Thermo Eberline ESM detection system.

Characteristic monitoring locations are truck and rail transit areas, passenger terminals and luggage channels, quay areas and airports. The detection systems used by customs authorities operate according to the same principle of monitoring as those used in nuclear power plants. Worldwide there are about 600 such systems installed.

The stationary monitoring systems are offered with various detectors. The continuous evaluation online determines the artificial radioactivity separately from the continuously varying natural Gamma-radiation. The false alarm rate is negligibly small - an important prerequisite for trouble-free operation with several thousand monitored vehicles a day. Every alarm is recorded.

The Radiameter FH 40 G-L with integrated wide range proportional detector has a dose rate measuring range of 100nSv/h to 100mSv/h. With connected detectors the highly sensitive detection of neutron or artificial gamma sources is simultaneously possible.
