Learning from failures
06 October, 2010
Over the last 30 years the number of fuel failures has fallen dramatically, and the common causes of these events have changed, according to a report from a European Union body set up to improve communication, regional collaboration and sharing of lessons learned on operational events. By Manuel Martín Ramos, M Nöel and Christiane Bruynooghe

Fuel vendor audits
06 October, 2010
The current goal of zero fuel failures requires meticulous quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) of fuel design, fabrication and fuel operation. Although fuel vendors are responsible for the fuel’s design and fabrication, utilities have the added responsibility of exercising QA over the design and fabrication of the fuel at the vendor’s facilities. One in a billion

Metal-imprinted polymers are a special class of polymers with enhanced binding selectivity, to the extent of achieving specificity under certain conditions. The lack of such selectivity is a big concern in the nuclear industry, such as in the separation of radioactive cobaltous ions from vastly more plentiful ferrous ions. This is one area where imprinting technology holds particular promise. By Anupkumar Bhaskarapillai, Narasimhan V Sevilimedu and Börje Sellergren

The laser alternative
24 August, 2010
One laser, configured in two different ways, can perform two important decommissioning jobs: tube cutting for size reduction and concrete scabbling for removal of contaminated surface layers. Both operations can be conducted in a safe, remote and efficient manner. By Paul Hilton, Ali Khan and Colin Walters
