First concrete pouring has been completed at unit 6 of China’s Ningde NPP in the province of Fujian China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) reported. First concrete for the nuclear island was poured in December 2025.
CGN said the pouring process lasted 58 hours and the total volume of concrete was 4081 cubic metres. This construction project encountered difficulties due to the complexity of the deep pit work and the limited space at the station site. To ensure smooth execution of the work, CGN Ningde Nuclear Power, together with CGN Engineering, Ningde’s design department and Hepeng Supervision, planned and worked closely with the construction departments in advance.
They used the experience of building a foundation slab for the conventional island turbine of unit 5, optimised the channels for pouring concrete and the layout of the construction site, simplified the construction logic in advance and promptly completed work on arranging adjacent corridors and backfilling. This made it possible to overcome the limitations associated with adjacent corridors and site conditions and ensure strict technical, safe and high-quality control.
Ningde NPP was the first nuclear plant to be built and put into operation in Fujian Province. The station currently consists of four 1,018 MWe CPR1000 power units, which began commercial operation between April 2013 and July 2016. The second phase, units 5&6, was approved by the State Council in July 2023, and features Chinese-designed HPR1000 (Hualong One) pressurised water reactors.
Since the start of work on the unit 6 foundation slab on 12 May, after 42 days of organisation and a scientific approach to construction, the physical acceptance at the site was completed and signed off on 22 June. From 23 to 26 June, the project underwent a start-up inspection by the National Power Authority’s Office of Design Quality Control for Conventional Island Nuclear Power Plants, and remediation work was completed on 28 June, officially confirming compliance with the conditions for concrete pouring.
Representatives from CGN Ningde Nuclear Power, CGN Engineering Ningde Project Department, Hepeng Supervision and CNNC 24 were present at the site during the concrete pouring process. The safety and quality of concrete pouring were controlled, work on the site went smoothly and all indicators met technical requirements.
