Installation of the CA05 module has been installed at unit 2 of China’s Lufeng NPP in Jieshi Township in Guangdong province.
The CA05 module is a 83.4-tonne steel sheet wall structure 5.7 metres long, 13.3 metres wide and 8 metres in height. Installation was challenging due to its irregular structure, its susceptibility to stress deformations and numerous disturbances from the steel reinforcement, as well as high precision requirements.
The primary function of the CA05 structural module is to form a core segment of the internal structural walls within the reactor containment building. Specifically, it acts as a permanent, high-strength structural barrier that segregates and supports critical nuclear safety systems.
To ensure the smooth installation, Lufeng Nuclear Power organised the coordination and promotion of all aspects of the work by the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute, creating a system of daily meetings to coordinate and resolve various issues in preparation for lifting the component. The successful lifting and installation of the CA05 module laid a solid foundation for the subsequent construction of the internal structure of the nuclear island reactor building.
The proposed construction of the four CAP1000 reactors for units 1-4 of the Lufeng plant was approved by China’s National Development & Reform Commission in September 2014, but construction of units 1&2 did not receive State Council approval until August 2024, with approval for units 3&4 still pending.
