Following a meeting with the IAEA, Vietnam's atomic energy commission has proposed two locations for its first nuclear power plant, according to a report from local media outlet VOV News.

The Vietnam Electricity Group chose Phuoc Dinh commune in Ninh Phuoc district and Vinh Hai commune in Ninh Hai district, in the southeastern province of Ninh Thuan to accommodate Vietnam’s first nuclear power plant.

It reported that the Ministry of Science and Technology is currently performing a safety review.

The country aims to have an operational plant by 2020, according to a statement by Vietnam Electricity Group, which is now gearing up for developing training programmes of 10-15 years for personnel for nuclear power plant work.

There are now about 750 people working at the Institute of Energy and more than 40 working at the Department of Radiation Safety and Nuclear. Both groups can be tapped for management resources.

This will be human resources for the management of safety, the researchers developed.

Cao Chi, a professor at Vietnam's institute of atomic energy, proposed the country set up a steering committee for nuclear personnel training.
