Paks extension and waste site approved

23 November 2005

The Hungarian parliament has voted to endorse plans to extend the operating lifetime of the Paks nuclear power plant by 20 years, and to develop a waste site in the country.

The resolution, acknowledges that extending Paks' lifespan represents a solution for the long-term energy security of the country. However, while the government move supports the development in principle, parliament does not have the authority to approve a lifetime extension.

As part of the parliamentary measures, preparation works for the creation of low- and medium-level radioactive waste storage site at Bataapati, in southern Hungary, have also been approved.
