HEU downblending in Kazakhstan

20 October 2005

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general Mohamed ElBaradei has praised a model programme downgrading highly enriched uranium (HEU) to low enriched uranium unable to be used in nuclear weapons.

The Kazakhstan government and Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) co-project has so far downgraded 2897kg of HEU. This has been securely stored, with ElBaradei saying the “NTI is providing a good example of how civil society can take a leadership role.”
