SMRs under consideration for Idaho nuclear project

8 October 2012

Alternate Energy Holdings, Inc. (AEHI) is exploring the use of small modular reactors (SMR) on its proposed nuclear power plant site in Payette County, Idaho.

“This would not necessarily replace our plans to build a large-scale reactor on the proposed site, but there may be an opportunity to build one or more years in advance of the larger reactor,” said Don Gillispie, AEHI CEO.

The company said that it is ‘seriously reviewing’ several SMR designs, including those from Babcock & Wilcox, Westinghouse, NuScale Power and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

SMRs, which have capacities ranging from 45 to 220 MW, have a number of advantages over conventional reactors. They are scalable, most can be manufactured in North America, they have superior safety features, a quicker construction timeframe and smaller upfront capital investment requirements, AEHI said in a statement.
