Ukraine nuclear energy cooperation to continue

29 September 2008

A detailed report on European Union (EU)-Ukraine energy programmes has been released by the European Commission (EC), which details how Ukraine should continue cooperation regarding nuclear energy with the EU. The report was discussed at the recent summit between the EU and Ukraine, which proved somewhat disappointing to Kiev’s pro-western government which wanted to secure guarantees about future EU and Euratom membership. However, detailed cooperation work will continue.

The report said that an ongoing European Commission-IAEA-Ukraine safety assessment of Ukraine nuclear power plants should wrap up next year. In the report, the Commission welcomed the appointment of external experts to take part in this work, saying this was “essential to attain the required level of credibility of the project necessary to obtain the acceptance of EU member states.” It noted that Ukraine experts had already started self assessments on the safety of the country’s nuclear plants, following guidelines drafted by the IAEA. This involved work schedules and self-assessment forms approved by all parties in the programme. A training seminar has also been staged for Ukraine organisations involved in these studies. Meanwhile, the Ukraine nuclear regulator – the state committee of nuclear regulation of Ukraine – has completed its own self-assessment regarding compliance with IAEA standards, said the report.
