Zero heavy water duty

15 December 2005

The European Commission has proposed opening unlimited three-year zero-duty European Union (EU) import quotas for heavy water (D2O) and non-irradiated hexagonal fuel modules (elements) for use in nuclear reactors, covering 2006-8.

Assuming the EU Council of Ministers agrees, the quotas – which can be exploited by any exporting country - will be opened on January 1.
