Bohunice set for closure

30 November 2005

The European Parliament has called for the European Commission to earmark an additional €163 million to decommission Slovakia’s Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant, because it believes the costs of the early closure of its two units are higher than previously estimated.

Furthermore, the parliament has called for Brussels to take into account the fact that Slovakia invested around €250 million into improving the plant’s safety before its accession to the EU last May and that this should be “taken into consideration” when setting financial assistance for Slovakia over the closure. The commission has so far earmarked €237 million, bringing the total European Union spend to €400 million on shutting down the two reactors, the first of which is due to be closed in 2006 and the second in 2008.

The European Parliament also agreed the money should be allocated to Slovakia between 2007 and 2013.
