The four 432 MWe VVERs at Dukovany provide 19% of the country’s electricity. The two 981 MWe VVERs under construction at Temelin are being modified, in a first-of-its-kind operation, to take a Western I&C system. Uranium production is being run down and all fuel cycle services are imported.

WANO tries some self-assessment

Uranium: adequacy in a maturing marketplace

The emergence of the Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union as substantial sources of uranium, the availability of LEU fuel sourced from stockpiles of HEU and the recent privatisation of the US Enrichment Corporation (USEC) as USEC Inc, mean there is likely to be an oversupply of uranium in the international market for the foreseeable future. With no perceptive increase in uranium demand, there should be no upward pressure on market prices. But problems such as trade constraints or mine production difficulties have the potential to dramatically change this picture.

Will much change after the climate change conference?

The third conference on climate change, known as COP3*, held in Kyoto during December, achieved significant agreement on emission reduction targets, even for the main energy users of Japan, the USA and the EU. However, the question of how to achieve the targets through, for example, emission trading regimes, sanctions and a greater use of nuclear power, is to be left to later conferences.
