Framatome expands nuclear co-operation with Hungary

Framatome has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hungary’s Ministry of Energy for the development of a strategic relationship in the nuclear field. The MOU seeks to facilitate the extension of the cooperation between Framatome and Hungary in various domains of interest in nuclear such as education and competencies, R&D, the implementation of new technologies, fuel supply and related nuclear materials, as well as long-term operation.

IAEA’s Grossi at Davos discusses nuclear power, Iran and Ukraine

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos on 24 and 25 May. Nuclear provides the opportunity for a faster transition to a low-carbon energy future and supports the shift to a hydrogen economy, he told participants. In an opinion piece on the WEF website, Grossi said that nuclear is gaining increasing support in the battle against climate change, that reaching net-zero carbon emissions will require a doubling of nuclear capacity, and that technology such as small modular reactors (SMRs) and used fuel repositories are increasing nuclear accessibility and safety.

UK Dalton Institute releases practical paper on nuclear’s role in achieving net zero

The Dalton Nuclear Institute at the UK’s University of Manchester on 15 July released a position paper: “Nuclear energy for net zero: a strategy for action”, which identifies the actions required to assess the role of nuclear in the UK's net-zero future. The paper’s authors include Francis Livens, director; Gregg Butler, head of strategic assessment; William Bodel, research associate in nuclear systems choice; and Juan Matthews, visiting professor in nuclear energy technology.

IAEA Fusion Energy Conference attracts record participation

The 28th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC), which is being held on-line from 10-15 May, has attracted a record 3,400 attendees, including both full participants and observers. The conference organisers include the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), and the ITER Organisation and the week-long programme takes full advantage of a powerful web platform.

Estonia appoints nuclear working group
12 April, 2021
At a cabinet meeting on 8 April, the Estonian government approved the official composition of the working group on nuclear energy, the Environment Ministry announced. The working group includes the Ministry of the Environment, the Environmental Board, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Social Affairs and the State Chancellery. The relevant authorities have already appointed their representatives and the members of the working group were approved by the Minister of the Environment.
