UK’s Forth Engineering wins two nuclear contracts

UK-based Forth Engineering has secured two separate contracts to carry out work on behalf of Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) company Magnox. Forth successfully tendered to design, manufacture and provide waste retrieval solutions in Magnox wet vaults at the Hinkley Point NPP, and also won another contract to design and install active effluent pumping facilities at Magnox’s SGHWR and Dragon reactors in Winfrith.

Zaporozhzhia NPP Director General released from detention

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, has confirmed that Ihor Murashov, Director General of Ukraine’s Zaporozhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), has been released from Russian custody following his detention on 30 September. “I welcome the release,” Grossi tweeted. “I have received confirmation that Mr Murashov has returned to his family safely.”

Sheffield Forgemasters partners GE Hitachi to support UK deployment of BWRX-300 SMR

GEH and Sheffield Forgemasters agreed to discuss how the existing and future capabilities of Sheffield Forgemasters could help meet the potential demands of BWRX-300 deployment.

Reinvented: The Dual Fluid principle

High efficiency is a key differentiator of the new nuclear power technology being developed by Dual Fluid. Instead of fuel rods, a Dual Fluid reactor contains two circulating fluids: one carries the fuel and the other extracts the heat. This concept “completely redefines nuclear power”, the start-up says. The Dual Fluid principle enables nuclear fuel to be utilised “up to a hundred times better than in today’s light water reactors”, while the “operating temperature of 1000°C enables new heat applications”.

Global nuclear industry submits statement to NPT Review Conference

The global nuclear industry on 12 August submitted a statement to the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), representing the views of more than 20 national and international industry associations supporting the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. The statement was handed to Conference President Ambassador Gustavo Zlauvinen, by the Director General of the World Nuclear Association Dr Sama Bilbao y León.

Argonne National Lab to test liquid metal fast reactors

The US Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) said on 10 May that it had added new capabilities to support testing of liquid metal fast reactors. The Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Test Article (THETA) will provide high-resolution and high-quality data that can be used to develop computer codes to support the licensing of liquid-metal fast reactor designs. THETA is currently running its first test with Oklo company, which seeks to better understand the behaviour of its fast reactor designs.

West Virginia seeks to end ban on nuclear construction
04 February, 2022
A bill removing the ban on construction of new nuclear power plants in the US state of West Virginia has been approved by both the Senate (by 24 votes to seven on 25 January) and the House of Delegates (by 76 votes to 16 on 31 January). and will now go to the state's governor for signature. The ban has been in place since 1996.
