Zorita resigned to shutdown

5 August 2004

Spain's Union Fenosa has dropped its legal challenge to the shutdown of unit 1 of the José Cabrera, Zorita plant. The way is now clear for closure on 30 April 2006.

The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council decided in 2002 that the 150MWe PWR in Guadalajara should close at that time, but Union Fenosa had appealed, saying that the plant should be allowed to operate until the end of its 40-year licence in 2008. No explanation for the withdrawal of the appeal has been given.
