ZiO-Podolsk to supply steam generators for BREST reactor

12 August 2020

Russia’s ZiO-Podolsk will manufacture steam generators for the reactor plant to be built as part of the Proryv (Breakthrough) project. ZiO-Podolsk (part of Atomenergomash, the engineering division of Rosatom) and the Siberian Chemical Combine (SCC) on 8 August signed an agreement that provides for the development of working design documentation, manufacturing, supply and installation supervision of steam generators for the lead-cooled fast neutron BREST-OD-300 for the Pilot Demonstration Energy Complex (ODEK), which is under construction at SCC as part of the Proryv project. ODEK will include three linked facilities: a fuel fabrication/re-fabrication unit, the  300MW BREST-OD-300 reactor, and a unit for used fuel reprocessing.

The steam generator is one of the most critical heat exchangers in a nuclear power plant. The draft design was created by ZiO-Podolsk specialists in 2010, after which work on the technical design followed. To substantiate the innovative product, broad cooperation among a number of enterprises was organised, led by the NN Dollezhal Research & Development Institute of Power Engineering (Nikiet). These included SSC, the AI Leipunsky Institute of Physics & Power Engineering (IPPE) in Obninsk, the Russian Federal Nuclear Centre YI Zababakhin All-Russian Institute of Technical Physics

(RFNC-VNIITF), the Research and Manufacturing Association – Central Research and Development Institute for Mechanical Engineering Technology (TsNIITMASH), the IP Bardin Central Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy (TsNIIchermet), and the Institute for Problems in Mechanics os the Russian Academy of Sciences RAS.

The main areas of investigation for the chosen design of the coiled apparatus were: study of thermohydraulic and vibration characteristics, development and supply for production of a new structural material with a full cycle of corrosion and corrosion-mechanical tests, and study of fretting corrosion. “Within the framework of the project, we are the developer of the technical design and the manufacturer of unique equipment for a reactor plant with a lead coolant, which is unique in the world,” explained Nikita Kislyakov, Deputy Chief Designer ZiO-Podolsk.
