Work continues at China’s Tianwan NPP

29 August 2016

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said installation of the reactor internals within the pressure vessel was completed at unit 3 of China's Tianwan NPP in Jiangsu province on 23 August. The 317t reactor vessel for Tianwan 3 was installed within the unit's reactor compartment in May 2015. Units 3 and 4 at Tianwan will be AES-91 VVER-1000 units designed by Russia’s Gidropress and supplied by Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

The main contractor, supplying the nuclear island, is Rosatom subsidiary Atomstroyexport. First concrete for unit 3 was poured in December 2012, and construction of unit 4 began in September 2013. Unit 3 is scheduled to begin operating in February 2018. Two similar reactors (units 1 and 2) began operating at the site in 2007. Tianwan NPP is owned and operated by Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation, a joint venture between CNNC (50%), China Power Investment Corporation (30%) and Jiangsu Guoxin Group (20%).

OKB Gidropress earlier in August hosted a delegation from Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation to introduce them to production and acceptance testing of the SUZ type of SHEM-3 control rod drives that are to be completed by mid-September for use at Tianwan unit 4. Gidropress has been contracted to produce 135 SHEM-3 control rod drives for Tianwan-4 and to date 103 CPS rod drives have been manufactured and accepted.
